How does Classism affect social behavior?
During the "Roaring Twenties" many people were prosperous. As President Hoover promised, there was "a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage." Classism is defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as "prejudice or discrimination based on class". During these times of prosperity the working class was frowned upon and the rich looked down on the poor. The wealth was not evenly distributed, so the lower and middle class had to work, while the upper class lived in luxury, with endless parties and social gathering.
The Great Gatsby incorporates classism by showing the way it affects social behavior. F.Scott Fitzgerald used his characters to represent the different social classes, and through them created a social commentary criticizing the wealthy for their lack of morality and their superior attitudes towards the working class, in order to address the issue of the unrighteous behavior that people felt entitled to with the assumption of money.
